The 10 most beautiful ski touring routes in Hinterstoder
In the heart of the Tote Gebirge: ski tours around Hinterstoder
Skiing is closely linked to the recent history of the Stodertal. Due to the construction of the railway to Spital am Pyhrn, nature-loving people discovered the region and explored the mountains on skis as early as the beginning of the 20th century. Subsequently, the mountains around Hinterstoder were made accessible by cable cars. First the Höss, later also the Bärenalm. Despite these developments, the largest part of the Hinterstoder mountain world is still wild and untamed and offers alpine skiers many a ski tour that one would expect to find in the Western Alps.
On the "Wilde" and the Bärenalm - easy ski tours near Hinterstoder
The ski tour to the „Wilde“, actually Wildalmleiten, is the classic for beginners and bad weather days in the Stoder Valley. From the starting point at the disused Hackl lifts in Vorderstoder, the route is mostly flat, with short steep sections in the forest, up to the 1950-metre-high summit.
Another route popular with beginners is the Wildalmleiten.
Another ski tour popular with beginners is the Bärenalm a little further back in the Stodertal valley. From the car park, which requires a fee, you climb up to the Schafferreith alpine hut via the alpine meadows or the slopes of the former ski area. The beauty of this tour is that despite the gentle slope, you can enjoy a great view of the majestic peaks towering on the other side of the valley. For those who prefer safe terrain, there is a piste tour to the Wurzeralm in nearby Spital am Pyhrn.
Alpine scenery of the first order - challenging tours near Hinterstoder
The peaks of the Tote Gebirge, which frame the Stoder Valley, offer challenging ski tours for several seasons. Many of these tours require very safe conditions, which is why they should mainly be considered in spring, when the avalanche danger is lower than in high winter, with appropriate time management.
.The Gasthof Baumschlagerreith at the very back of the Stodertal is a starting point for a number of challenging ski tours. Among the comparatively easier destinations is the Kleine Brieglersberg through the Sigistal. Those who are not afraid of places with a gradient of over 50 degrees can choose the Wassertal valley as an ascent and climb the large Kraxenberg or the Hebenkas. However, the main goal of many alpine skiers is of course the Grosse Priel, the highest mountain in the Tote Gebirge.
Tip: Warscheneck via Zellerhütte
Due to its location and altitude (2388 m), the Warscheneck is one of the most beautiful panoramic mountains in Upper Austria and also a popular ski touring destination. The mountain is often tackled from the Wurzeralm ski area, i.e. from Spital am Pyhrn. Another variant starts in Vorderstoder via the Zellerhütte. This demanding ski tour is without a doubt one of the highlights of the Stoder Valley.
