Discover Dresden on the move

Welcome to Dresden! If you have your running shoes with you, you've done everything right. The city offers a wonderful mix of urban flair, baroque scenery and natural trails that are just waiting to be discovered by you. Whether you want to go for a quick run before breakfast or a long run to explore, you are guaranteed to find the right route here.

The classic: Large garden

The Great Garden is the green lung of Dresden and probably the most popular place to go for anyone who enjoys running. On the wide, mostly flat and well-maintained paths, you can collect your kilometers in a relaxed manner. The central main avenue is perfect for a brisk pace, while the countless winding side paths always offer new impressions. You run past meadows, small lakes and the impressive palace in the center of the park. Thanks to the vastness of the park, everyone can find their own pace here and it never gets too crowded. A loop around the park measures around 5 kilometers and is therefore ideal for beginners and advanced runners.

The panoramic route: The banks of the Elbe

If you want to enjoy a spectacular view while running, then lace up your shoes for a run along the Elbe. The paths on both banks are flat and paved or gravelled throughout, making them ideal for any distance. The route on the Neustadt side in particular, with views of the famous silhouette of the old town with the Frauenkirche and Hofkirche, is an absolute highlight. You can run for miles, past the Elbe castles and under the historic bridges. In summer, the Elbe meadows create a unique atmosphere when city life moves outside.

The nature experience: the Dresden Heath

For those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and prefer to run on forest ground, the Dresdner Heide in the north of the city is the perfect destination. It is one of the largest urban forests in Germany and offers a huge network of trails. You can really work off your energy here, because in contrast to the flat routes along the Elbe and in the Great Garden, there are also some hills to conquer. The scent of the forest, the tranquillity and the varied paths make a run in the Heath a real nature experience. Just make sure you don't get lost - the Heath is really big!

FAQs from the community

What are the most popular jogging routes in Dresden?

The Elbe meadows (on both sides between Blasewitz, Loschwitz and the Old Town), the Great Garden (circular routes, busy), the Dresden Heidewald (trail feeling, many branches) and the gravel lakes around Zschieren/Laubegast are classics. The Elbe riverside paths are particularly suitable for flat routes.

Where can I find flat and beginner-friendly routes?

Along the Elbe: e.g. from Blaues Wunder (Loschwitz Bridge) towards the city center or to Pillnitz. The Great Garden also offers wide, flat paths of varying lengths (2-10 km).

Where can I jog safely and well-lit in the evening?

The Großer Garten and central sections of the Elbe are relatively well frequented. Nevertheless, pack a headlamp, wear light-colored/reflective clothing and stick to familiar main paths. It is not recommended to walk on the heath in the evening without a headlamp.

Are there any places to drink or take a break along the way?

There are seasonal kiosks/cafés along the Elbe and in the Großer Garten. Nevertheless, take water with you on longer runs, especially in summer. Drinking fountains are available in places, but not everywhere.

Tips for safe and enjoyable jogging in the Dresden region

  • Run in the summer months preferably in the early morning or evening hours
  • Route choice: Elbe cycle path for flat units, Großer Garten for circuits, Dresdner Heide for trails
  • Watch out for cyclists and walkers in busy areas
  • Wear reflective clothing at dusk or in the dark
  • In the city center, car-free paths are particularly suitable for relaxed jogging
  • For longer distances, drink enough and be prepared for the weather
