The hike around the highest peak of the German central uplands leads to geological and botanical special features and provides cooling in the Zastler Eislöcher and waterfalls.

The circular hike leads us to the traces of the Feldberg glacier, which left ice holes in the Zastler valley. Cold air flows out of them until summer, noticeably cooling the surroundings. At about 700 meters of altitude between the Feldberg summit (1,493 m above NHN) and the Zastler ice holes (775 m) we experience temperature differences of up to 30 °C.

The start is at Feldberger Hof. From there it goes over the Seebuck through meadows and pastures to the Feldberg summit with a wonderful view up to the Alps. On the descent to Hüttenasen, the first opportunity to stop is in the St. Wilhelmer hut. Through the shady Zastler valley, we continue to the Zastler Kluse and past the waterfalls of the Zastlerbach to an ice hole directly on the path. On the way back, the plunging streams of the Zastlerbach invite to refreshment. On weekends, locals like to use them for rinsing off. We climb the Zastler hut path to the managed Zastler hut in the Zastler Loch and shortly afterward to the Baldenweger hut at 1,461 m, before returning to the starting point via the Feldbergsteig and the Felsenweg.

    Author’s recommendation

In the recommended direction, the route is also advisable on summer days due to the high proportion of forest and altitude.
