The shady, almost subalpine altitude of the Feldsee, together with the crystal-clear water of the streams flowing into it, ensures that the water remains particularly cool and rich in oxygen all year round. Beneath the water’s surface, rare and extremely sensitive plant species thrive, including the spiny-spored water avens, which is found only here and, very occasionally, in Lake Titisee.
To protect this unique habitat, the Feldsee is situated within the Feldberg Nature Reserve. As a result, there is a general ban on swimming. Please stay on the marked paths so that animals and plants remain undisturbed in their natural environment.
Impressive rock faces, rising up to 300 metres high, tower around the lake; when the water is calm and the air clear, they are spectacularly reflected in the mirror-smooth surface of Lake Feldsee.
Places to stop for refreshments near Feldsee: the Raimartihof
Not far from the lake is the Raimartihof, which invites you to stop for a refreshing break and linger a while. The Westweg trail (marked with a red diamond on the signposts) also passes through here.
Walks to Feldsee
Feldsee can only be reached on foot. We recommend the walking route starting from the valley station of the Feldberg Cable Car or from the ‘Feldberg-Caritas’ bus stop. For those looking for a slightly longer walk: the Feldbergsteig (approx. 5 hours) is one of the most beautiful hikes on the Feldberg and also takes you past Feldsee.
History of Feldsee
Around 10,000 years ago, the glacier of that time formed the almost perfectly circular Feldsee and carved out a water basin up to 30 metres deep. It lies nestled at the eastern foot of the Feldberg massif and is fed by the numerous small, spring-fed streams flowing down from the Seebuck. From Feldsee itself, the Seebach stream flows on through Titisee and later through the Wutach, eventually into the Rhine.
