Die Zastler Eislöcher sind ein besonderes Naturphänomen im oberen Zastlertal am Fuße des Feldbergs: Einheimische nutzten sie als natürliche Kühlschränke.

Eislöcher sind Spalten und Hohlräume zwischen Felsblöcken, in denen sich selbst im Hochsommer noch Eisreste finden lassen.

Die Zastler Eislöcher entstanden durch die vom Zastlertal-Gletscher - einem Ausläufer des Feldberggletschers - mitgeführten Felsblöcke und spätere Felsstürze ins Zastlertal.

Im Winter sammelt sich in den Hohlräumen Schnee, der durch die kalte Luft lange konserviert wird. Im Frühjahr taut der Schnee nur langsam, da die Sonne die Vertiefungen kaum erreicht und die kalte Luft durch eine natürliche Thermik erhalten bleibt. Warme Luft strömt oben in die Felsblöcke, kühlt sich an den Steinen ab, sinkt nach unten und entweicht als kalter Luftzug.

Auch im Sommer bleibt die Temperatur in den Eislöchern meist um den Gefrierpunkt, teilweise sogar bis in den August hinein. Früher nutzten die Einheimischen die Eislöcher als natürliche Kühlschränke für Milch und Butter.

Rund um die Eislöcher herrscht ein besonderes Mikroklima mit hoher Feuchtigkeit und dauerhaft niedrigen Temperaturen. Dadurch konnte sich dort eine seltene, subalpine Pflanzenwelt erhalten, die sonst typisch für eiszeitliche Lebensräume ist. Während Eislöcher in den Alpen gelegentlich vorkommen, sind sie in Mittelgebirgen wie dem Schwarzwald sehr selten. Die Zastler Eislöcher liegen dabei ungewöhnlich niedrig – auf nur etwa 785 Metern Höhe.
