Biologische Station StädteRegion Aachen e.V.
The circular hike leads partly through old oak stands. You pass areas where the conversion from spruce forest to mixed deciduous forest has been initiated.
The route initially runs along the stream over sometimes narrow, rocky paths through the forest. You pass areas where spruces have been felled and the cleared areas planted with various deciduous trees. Along the path, the perennial silverleaf grows in places, which is typical for ravine forests. After crossing the stream at a ford, the path climbs through deciduous forest. Here there are still some remnants of old oak forests. On this section of the tour, you may hear the eagle owl at dusk, which has been spreading again in this area for several years.
Author’s recommendation
The Café/Bistro Grünental opposite the starting point of the hike is a good place to stop for refreshments.
Can be combined with the hikes Belgenbach 1 - Wet meadow and floodplain forest and Belgenbach 2 - Elm and forest conversion.
Derived from the technical difficulty and the stamina requirements.

Safety information
A large part of the paths is interspersed with roots and rock slabs. The stream must be crossed over stones; hiking poles can be helpful. Good surefootedness is required. The stones can be very slippery when wet. If the stream carries a lot of water after heavy rain, crossing it dry-footed can become difficult.
The circular route should not be attempted in ice and snow.

Roadbook
From the Widdau parking lot we go along the road and down a forest path to the Grünental parking lot.
To the right of the entrance to the parking lot is a path over a bridge. Behind the bridge we turn left (trail 32). The path leads uphill along the Belgenbach stream. At the next possibility we follow trail 32 to the left and cross a footbridge.
We continue straight on the left path through the forest uphill to a forest path, where we turn left. This leads downhill and finally over the stream again.
We follow the path leading to the right and walk parallel to the stream until we reach a wet meadow. In this area, we cross the stream over large stones and meet trail 32 again on the other side, which we follow to the right.
At the "Alsdorfer Bergmannskreuz" we take the right path downhill, at the next opportunity a short left uphill and then straight steep downhill, passing a slate rock on the left.
Along the stream, we reach again the footbridge we crossed at the beginning. Behind it, we take the wide forest path to the right (trail 32) and finally return to the parking lot.
