5 Belgenbach 2 - Mountain Elm and Forest Conversion
Biologische Station StädteRegion Aachen e.V.
This circular hike leads through a relic stand of a ravine forest. Here grow some of the last old mountain elms still found in this area today.
The hike leads out of the town initially along meadows and finally downhill into the valley. Here, spruces have been widely felled and various deciduous trees planted. In the valley, you walk parallel to the stream through deciduous forest and pass an old ravine forest. Here grow some of the last old mountain elms of the area. Other plants typical for moist slope locations found here include Perennial Silverweed, Arum, as well as many mosses and ferns. Along meadows, the path leads back into town.
Author’s recommendation
There are several places to eat in Imgenbroich.
The hike can be combined with the hikes Belgenbach 1 - Wet Meadow and Riparian Forest and Belgenbach 3 - Silverweed and Oak Forest.

Roadbook
We follow the street „Am Weiher“ to the end, then turn right (Auf der Rahm) and at the end turn left (Schulstraße). We follow the street straight until we reach a farm (Tränkhof).
Opposite the entrance to Tränkhof, we turn right (Hiking trail 62) and go down into the valley. There, we turn right and head towards Belgenbach Mill, passing a shelter on the left side of the path.
We stay on this path (Hiking trail 24), which continues downhill.
We reach a path, which we follow to the right. We are now on Hiking trail 27. We follow this trail. At the next junction - at Belgenbach Mill - we turn right uphill (Hiking trail 62).
At the next fork, we keep left and continue on Hiking trail 62. We cross the Asselbach, a tributary of Belgenbach. At the next opportunity, we leave Hiking trail 62 by sharply turning right onto a narrow path uphill.
We follow the path and come to a forest road. There we keep right. We cross the Asselbach again and shortly after turn left onto the forest road. We follow the road straight ahead.
At the next fork, we take the paved path to the right and follow that path. It leads into a street. We follow the street (Heidbüchel) until we reach Trierer Straße. There we turn right back to the parking lot.
