Az Ajnácskő központjában találhatóhoz nagyon hasonló szikla egy ún. diatréma, azaz vulkáni kürtőkitöltés. Kissé hihetetlen, de amit ma látunk, az az egykori vulkán belseje, a kürtőben megrekedt magma, amelyről a sokkal puhább, vulkáni törmelékből felépülő kráter teljesen lepusztult. A 285 méter tengerszint feletti magasságot elérő sziklaszirt falai a falu felől nézve lényegében függőlegesek, tökéletes metszetét adva a több millió évvel ezelőtt történt földtörténeti eseményeknek.
A nagyrészt vulkáni törmelékből (finomszemcsés vulkáni hamuból, nagyobb szemcsés tufából és vulkáni bombákból) álló sziklát nyolc darab bazalt (láva) benyomulás (telér) szabdalja át, amelyek így a kevésbé ellenálló tufát megvédték a lepusztulástól. Az 1964 óta fokozottan védett terület természetesen a geológusok paradicsoma; a kipreparálódott csúcsról már 1865-ben tanulmányt írtak.
Egykoron ezen a sziklatűn is vár állott (Dánoskő vára), amelyet az 1241-es tatárjárás során a helyiek saját költségükön megerősítettek, és így sikeresen ellenálltak a tatárok támadásának. Ez hatalmas szó volt akkoriban, mint azt tudjuk a történelemkönyvekből. Hősies cselekedetükért IV. Béla király 1245-ben a várvédőknek nemesi rangot adott. Ebben az időszakban történhetett a legjelentősebb emberi beavatkozás is a sziklán: legmagasabb platóján egy kb. három méter átmérőjű és hat méter mély víztartályt véstek ki a várvédők vízellátásának biztosítására.

- A Sőregen keresztülhaladó S jelzés egy elágazással meghódítja a Bagolyvárat is. Az elágazásból 45 m kapaszkodással, 500 m alatt jutunk fel a sziklacsúcs közelébe (teljesen a tetejére nem lehet kimenni).

- A Bagolyvár alatt, a turistaút elágazásnál a KRESZ szabályai szerint tudunk parkolni.
