Interregio hiking trail stage 3: Kandern – Steinen
From Kandern, the Westweg initially accompanies us before the Interregio hiking trail branches off to the east near Burg Rötteln shortly before Lörrach. With the stage destination in Steinen, the trail reaches the southern foothills of the Black Forest in the front Wiesental.
Welcome to the Interregio hiking trail! Together we explore the tri-border region between Switzerland, France and Germany and discover a fascinating and diverse part of Europe! The three major hiking clubs of the region, the hiking trails of both Basels, the Vosges Club and the Black Forest Club, have jointly cared for this cross-border trail since the 1980s, which has now been revised and newly marked to invite you to discover the tri-border region!
The third stage mostly follows the Westweg of the Black Forest Club and offers wide views into the Triregio. From Kandern in the southern Markgräflerland, we hike along the track of the Kandertalbahn and the little river Kander through the wild romantic Wolfsschlucht to Hammerstein. Vineyards line the trail to the "Baselblickhütte". It offers a magnificent view of the Basel basin. Behind Wollbach, the path goes through the Röttler forest to the former Fortress Rötteln. High above Lörrach, the mighty castle ruin is the emblem of the town. The third largest castle ruin in Baden dates back to the 11th century. It was once one of the strongest fortresses in the southwest, until it was burned down in 1678 by French troops. Since 1884, the Baden Black Forest Club has looked after the preservation of the ruin, and since 1925 the Röttelnbund. The Staufer bergfried offers wide views over Lörrach and the Wiesental. In the front Wiesental, the Interregio hiking trail heads via Hauingen to the stage destination Steinen, one of five gates to the Southern Black Forest Nature Park. Sandstone quarries gave the village its name.

Roadbook
The hike starts at Blumenplatz in Kandern at the signpost "Stadtmitte (350 m)". Following the red lozenge of the Westweg past the "Wöschplatzbrunnen", we reach the L 134, go to the fire station, continue to the social station and then turn right to cross the tracks of the Kandertalbahn heritage railway into the forest. On a narrow path we reach the "Hebelbrünnli".
After a short ascent, we arrive at the signpost "Wolfsschlucht", where we turn left to wild romantic rock formations.
Via the "Brudersloch" and "Burgholz" we finally reach the valley near Hammerstein. We arrive at the village at the signpost "Unter der Burg". To the left, we go past "Am Dorfbrunnen" and then turn right again. In "Im Dörfli" we turn left, cross the L 134 and walk uphill to "Egisholz" and later to the viewpoint at the "Baselblickhütte (390 m)".
From there it goes downhill again, to Wollbach "Ob dem Rathaus" and straight ahead to "Kronenplatz (315 m)". After crossing the village, the path climbs again into the forest. The next stops are "Eselplatz", "Eichholen" and "Wolfsloch". On a wide path, we reach the "Wittlinger Höhe (433 m)". On the "Wittlinger Trimm-Dich-Pfad" we hike over the "Schloßhalde" to "Burg Rötteln".
After visiting the once mighty castle complex, we follow the yellow lozenge downhill towards Röttelnweiler, cross the highway bridge and immediately go under the A98 again through Hasenloch to the Lörrach district of Haagen (302 m), the lowest point of the stage. At the northern edge of the settlement, the path gently climbs to drop down again to the church in Hauingen. With a view into the Wiesental, we follow the Steinenbach from "Hölzle" to Steinen to the "Steinenbachbrücke". Turning right, we arrive at the stage destination at Steinen station.
