Tourismuszentrale Region Neunkirchen
On this route, you pass idyllic ravines, striking rock formations, colorful meadow landscapes, and ascend magnificent ridge trails. Highlights of the circular hiking trail are the seven historic fountain facilities, which give the path its name. You also pass numerous boundary stones.
From Hangard, the gateway to the Ostertal, the path leads past picturesque floodplains with winding streams as well as over natural and varied forest paths. Highlights of the circular hiking trail are the seven fountain facilities. They have existed in part for 300 years and have given the trail its name:
- Village Fountain
- Comradeship Fountain
- Eberts Spring
- Franken Fountain
- Karls Fountain
- Holler Fountain
- Brother Fountain
The path leads past the Stone Man, the site of a Roman four-god stone. We also pass numerous boundary stones, some dating back to the year 1560. We pass through a rock gate at the mighty natural monument Zimmermannsfels. Several viewpoints allow us to enjoy magnificent panoramic views over the Westrich to the Vosges and over the Ostertal to the Hochwald. Four well-distributed shelters and numerous seats offer opportunities to rest and enjoy. On the sensory bench at Klingenschlag, you can let your soul dangle with a wonderful view.

Attention:
Entering the forest and using the hiking trails is fundamentally at your own risk!
Seasonal and weather-related conditions require increased surefootedness on some trail sections. Please wear clothing and hiking boots with appropriate soles that suit the season and weather. Be mindful of breaking branches and damaged trees. In strong wind and during winter with snow and ice, the risks of falling trees and dropping branches increase.
Please pay special attention:
Carefully walk the constructed stairs in the forest (they can be slippery due to fallen leaves).
TOGETHER WITH RESPECT
Friendliness, understanding and consideration for each other are fundamental principles for the cooperative use of our natural environment. The code of conduct is: Use existing trails, follow signposting and respect trail closures, do not leave traces such as litter or dog waste and treat the path gently, respect other forest and field users, be considerate of animals and plants, plan ahead and use daylight.

We also want to point out the risks and therefore ask you to stay on the designated paths and not to enter rock formations for safety reasons. Furthermore, we point to natural forest hazards. Due to weather, some sections of the path may be softened and slippery, requiring extra caution. Sturdy footwear is therefore recommended on all routes, surefootedness is indispensable. Using the hiking trails and premium hiking trails is at your own risk.

Roadbook
From the starting point, the Hangard village fountain, the path runs along the street past the Ostertalhalle to the sports field. Here, it follows a path along the last clusters of houses into the forest to the Comradeship Fountain. After a short section downhill on a wider path, you reach the Lautenbach and hike along the brook on narrow paths. A flood bypass is signposted here in case the brook overflows its banks. Further along the path is soon the rest shelter at Eberts Spring.
Continuing along the brook, you leave the forest to the Holy Meadow, a section with views of orchards and the forest edge. After a short climb, the path goes down again into the forest and up the so-called Heaven's Ladder, a steeper climb, to the next rest area with a shelter.
From here, it steadily goes downhill to the Franken Fountain and over path-like, narrow ways to the Karls Fountain. The path then rises slightly again to the Steinberghütte with views towards Neunkirchen. After a short section on forest roads, it returns to paths and curves to the Brother Fountain and up to the viewpoint at Lichterkopf. There is also a rest area with a shelter and a beautiful distant view.
Via the section "Gorge Path" it goes down to the Oster past the natural monument Zimmermannskanzel. Along the Oster brook again directly at the brook to the entrance of Hangard. Always following the street, there is a short climb to a viewpoint overlooking the village before returning to the village fountain and thus the starting point of the hike.
