A környező csúcsokra aggatott galya eredetileg tájszó, amely a szláv eredetű hol’a szóból ered, és kopár, fátlan hegytetőt vagy domboldalt jelent.
A Kőlyuk-galya elegyes erdőjében a csúcstól keletre és délnyugatra több idős, védett, a Natura 2000 hálózathoz tartozó erdőfolt is akad. A 140–200 éves fákból is álló erdőrészletek összterülete több mint 100 hektár. A gyepes-fás mozaikokban megtalálható erdőfoltok fafajai között a kocsánytalan és molyhos tölgyek mellett a magas kőris a leginkább jellemző.
A magaslati oszloptól nem messze, északkeleti irányban német katona sírját látogathatjuk meg. A hepehupás terepen megközelíthető emlékhely környékén az erdő maga is megér egy misét: itt is vannak hatalmasra nőtt, idősebb egyedek.

- Kisgyőrből a Z jelzés vezet a csúcs közelébe, az utolsó szakaszt már a Z▲ jelzésen kell megtennünk (6 km, 521 m szintemelkedés).

- Bükkszentkereszten a Kossuth utca elején parkolhatunk.
- Kisgyőrben a Polgármesteri Hivatal előtt vagy a falu szélén, a kilátónál érdemes parkolni.
