Kemend várának története
A várdomb már az ősidők óta lakott volt, újkőkor végi és kora bronzkori leletekre is bukkantak a régészek. Az Árpád-korban előbb föld-, majd a tatárjárás után kővár épült – a korabeli leírások alapján ekkor egy külső és egy belső várból állt az erődítmény, utóbbiban egy nagyobb torony, kápolna, kút és kőház is állt. A 16. század közepére a zalai végvárrendszer része lett, ez idő tájt a Zala völgyének megfigyelése, a török portyázók megjelenése esetén Zalaegerszeg várának értesítése volt. Védelmi funkciókat nem látott el: amikor az ellenség nagyobb csapatokkal megjelent, a vár kiürítésre került, csak a veszély elmúlta után tértek vissza falai közé. 1664-ben török kézre került, hadászati jelentőségét Kanizsa várának 1690-es felszabadulása után vesztette el. A várat birtokló Festetics család a 18. században új uradalmi központot hozott létre Olláron, az egykori erődítmény falait elbontották, építőanyagként hasznosították újra.

- A Kemendollár vasútállomásról is indulhatunk.

- A Kemendollár, Kemendi utca 16. buszmegállóból a PL jelzések vezetnek fel a várdombra (890 m, 67 m szintemelkedés).
- Kemendollár vasútállomásának bekötőútjáról, az Ady Endre utcáról balra fordulunk a Petőfi Sándor utcába, majd a Zrínyi Miklós utcán vezető PL jelzésre térve érkezünk meg a kilátóhelyre (2,2 km, 100 m szintemelkedés).
Parking
- Kemend temetője mellett hagyhatjuk az autót.
- Bár jóval messzebb található, de Kemendollár vasútállomásánál is tudunk parkolni.
