Backelstein Castle is a former spur castle (wooden castle) of unknown status south of the municipality of Hauenstein. The castle is situated 310 metres above sea level on a rocky outcrop on the south-western slope of the Weimersberg, west of the Soldatenkopf, and no documentary mention of the castle is known. It is therefore not possible to make any statements about its construction, history or inhabitants. According to legend, it was the hunting lodge of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. Shards of yellow wheel thrown ware suggest that it was used before the 13th century. The castle site shows only a few postholes in the rock. A rock chamber and a staircase hewn out of the rock can be recognised on the north side. There are no masonry remains at all.
The Backelstein can be reached via the Hauensteiner Schusterpfad premium hiking trail. Click here for the hike: https://www.urlaubsregion-hauenstein.de/aktiv/wandern/premiumwandern/hauenstein-schusterpfad
Backelstein - spectacular rocky landscape with a view The Backelstein towers high above Hauenstein - an impressive red sandstone rock in the Palatinate Forest, which offers a breathtaking panoramic view over the vast forests and valleys. An ideal destination for anyone who wants to combine nature, activity and relaxation.
The Hauensteiner Schusterpfad, a certified premium hiking trail, leads directly past the Backelstein and offers a varied route with idyllic forest paths, bizarre rock formations and fantastic views. The hike combines sporting challenges with unique nature experiences and is a real highlight for active connoisseurs. For the adventurous, the Backelstein also offers exciting climbing routes of varying degrees of difficulty. Those who prefer to stay on the ground can explore the fascinating rock formations and savour the moment in the impressive natural scenery.
Tip: A visit in the late afternoon is particularly worthwhile - this is when the evening sun bathes the rock in a warm, golden light and makes for an unforgettable natural experience.
