Hauenstein - valleys, lakes, rocks ... beautiful!
Günther Weinert
The route offers quite a bit of contrasting variety: On one hand, a quiet, intact hiking landscape with striking rock formations to linger at; on the other hand, sociable places to eat at the "Dicke Eiche" hiking lodge, at the paddling pond, or in the town center. Furthermore, Hauenstein offers its visitors shopping opportunities on an additional 40 Sundays and public holidays.
You can also vary the circular route—shown on the map—(see trail description) and extend it to additional intermediate destinations, such as the Winterkirchl chapel.
From the Hühnerstein with its orientation board, you can see other hiking hotspots in the nearby area:
- Lug - Geiersteine & Höllenberg, rock landscapes to marvel at
- Oberschlettenbach - Bühlhof, Buhlsteine, Löffelsberg, and Langenwalderfelsen
- Lindelbrunn - From the Lindelbrunn ruin to Dimbach with the rock landscapes Immersberg, Dimberg, and Rötzenberg
- Annweiler - Rehberg observation tower, Kleiner Hahnstein and the ruins Scharfeneck and Anebos
- Waldhambach - Off to the Madenburg!

Roadbook
From the Wasgau outdoor pool, which has a spacious parking lot, follow the hiking signs of the "Burghalder Weg" in a curve around the Burghalderfels (a vanished hill castle or castle site) to the paddling pond. Continue on this hiking trail, which initially leads to the Queich spring. There you have the opportunity to rest and take a Kneipp bath.
Further on, you can follow the "Burghalder Weg" or ascend from the valley end on a zigzag path via the "Pfälzer Waldpfad" to the "Dicke Eiche" hiking lodge. At the top, you will find not only a place to eat (note opening hours; see the picture in the photo series) but also a magnificent view over the Queich valley.
You now leave the "Burghalder Weg" or "Pfälzer Waldpfad" and trust the path of the "Hauensteiner Schusterpfad," which safely leads you to the "Hühnerstein" viewing rock and to the fork "Backelsteinhalde/Backelstein junction, 360 m." The Backelstein is a rock massif rising steeply about 60 m high and one of the highest climbing rocks of the Palatinate. It was once the site of an early medieval refuge castle. You can reach the upper observation platform via stairs that are currently (2019) in poor condition.
Here, at the fork above the Backelstein, you have several options to end the route:
- You leave the "Hauensteiner Schusterpfad" and descend directly to the Wasgau outdoor pool via the "Backelstein Höhenweg." Along this narrow zigzag path lie the remains of the refuge castle.
- You continue to the various viewing rocks: Dörreinfelsen, Kahler Felsen, and Kreuzfelsen. After this small sightseeing tour, you return the same way to the known fork at the Backelstein and then down to the starting point at the outdoor pool. This variant corresponds to the Outdooractive route.
- You follow the "Hauensteiner Schusterpfad" first to the rocks and then descend the mountain a bit to turn left at the next fork. The "Panoramaweg Hauenstein" (black P on a white circular background), where you are now, also leads you back to the Wasgau outdoor pool.
On warm days, be sure to bring your swimsuit. You can nicely finish the route at the Wasgau outdoor pool! Simply the perfect conclusion!
