Der 3599 m hohe Similaun an der Staatsgrenze zwischen Österreich und Italien (Südtirol) kam am 19. September 1991 als Fundstelle des "Ötzi" in die Medien. Auf dem 3210 hohen Tisenjoch im Schnalstal wurde der Mann vom Similaun gefunden.

Dominant steigt er in die Höhe. Etwa 4 km Luftlinie nordöstlich des Vernagt-Stausees im Schnalstal und 11 km südlich von Vent, einem Ortsteil von Sölden im Ötztal. Als Stützpunkt für eine Similaunbesteigung eignet sich die Similaunhütte auf 3019 m am Niederjoch. Von dort führt ein Normalweg in südöstlicher Richtung über den flachen Firn des oberen Niederjochferners und über den Westgrad zum Gipfel. Von der Martin-Busch-Hütte auf 2501 m ist eine Besteigung ebenfalls möglich. Die frühere klassische Eistour durch die Nordwand ist heute aufgrund der massiven Gletscherschmelze und der dadurch ausgelösten Steinschlaggefahr unmöglich geworden.
