Popular glacier route from the Similaun hut
From Vernagt at the reservoir of the same name in Schnals (1711 m) take path 2 northwards uphill to the Tisenhof (snack station), through the beautiful, lonely Tisen valley, continuing mostly moderately ascending (there is a tiny shepherd’s shelter with the so-called "Rhaetian Passage" at one point) and finally somewhat steeper on a good and easy rocky path up to the Similaun hut at Niederjoch (3019 m; around 100 beds), approx. 3:30 to 4 hours from Vernagt. Possibly overnight here. The next day briefly over blockwork southwards, then over the initially quite flat but soon sharply rising and crevassed glacier upwards (usually either on the western or eastern edge on a well-trodden path) and finally over the sharply defined firn or ice ridge to the summit. Just under 2 hours from the hut. The descent is via the ascent path.
