Der Berg erreichte traurige Berühmtheit, als im Ersten Weltkrieg bei den „Piaveschlachten“ tausende von Soldaten im Stellungskrieg mit Italien und Österreich-Ungarn ums Leben kamen. Auf dem Monte Grappa liegen die Überreste von 12.615 italienischen und 10.295 österreichischen Soldaten. Im Jahr 1930 wurde auf dem Gipfel ein Ossarium zum Gedenken an die Gefallenen errichtet. Zusammen mit einem monumentalen Denkmal bildet es die Gedenkstätte auf dem Gipfel.
