Das Kreuz wurde Ende der 1940er Jahre aus Alteisen geschmiedet. Wichtige Bestandteile waren Sauerstoffflaschen und Panzerteile aus Kriegszeiten. Zerlegt in seine Einzelteile wurde das Kreuz schließlich auf den Gipfel getragen/gezogen und im September 1950 feierlich aufgerichtet. Zu Ehren der Gefallenen wurden am Chiemgau Kreuz über die Jahre hinweg Gedenktafeln angebracht.
Immer am letzten Sonntag im August wird des Weiteren ein Gottesdienst gefeiert – zunächst auf dem Ostgipfel, später in der eigens errichteten Kapelle an der Steinlingalm.
