The Kampenwand – the landmark of the Chiemgau Alps
The characteristic and eponymous rock ridge of the 1669 m high Kampenwand can be seen from afar. Once too high for the ice, the vertical rock faces made of Wetterstein limestone have been preserved and thus became the landmark of the Chiemgau Alps.
Below the Kampenwand massif, a primeval mixture of limestone and dolomite was deposited, forming the basis for the remarkable plant diversity on the Kampenwand. In interplay with the large- and small-scale climatic conditions, the specific and diverse alpine flora of the Kampenwand unfolds here every year.
Gentle hills, mighty rock faces, healthy air, and attractive views provide an impressive setting for varied hikes in one of the most extensive and diverse hiking trail networks in the Bavarian Alps. From the flat panoramic trail to climbing adventures when storming the summit, everything is offered here depending on desire and ability. At the Kampenwand, besides hiking enthusiasts, climbers, mountain bikers, and paragliders also find the best conditions for their hobby.
The mountain world can be explored easily and comfortably with the Kampenwand cable car. From the gondola, you first see the Prien valley with the cultural landmark Hohenaschau Castle from the 12th century. A little higher to the north is the lake region with the Chiemsee and islands. After 14 minutes, having reached almost 1500 m, the view opens to the Central Alps with the Hohe Tauern, Großglockner, Wilder Kaiser, Loferer Steinberge, and the Berchtesgaden Alps.
And since exercise and fresh air make you hungry, you will find a wide selection of rustic huts and alpine pastures on the Kampenwand for refreshment in between. Only about 100 m from the mountain station, the SonnenAlm awaits you with a wind-protected terrace and good Bavarian cuisine.
