On the 1667 m high east summit of the Kampenwand massif stands the 12 m high Chiemgau Cross since the early 1950s. Made from parts of old oxygen bottles and tanks from World War II, it commemorates the fallen of the region.
The route starts at the mountain station of the Kampenwand cable car and then leads along the scenic panoramic hiking trail to the Steinlingalm and chapel. The ascent to the summit cross proceeds via a narrow, steep, and rocky path – in the summit area even over a short, cable-secured trail. Therefore, surefootedness and freedom from dizziness are absolute requirements on this route.
On the small summit platform, there is a wonderful view over the Bavarian Alpine foothills and Lake Chiemsee; in the other direction, the central Alps rise with the Berchtesgaden mountains, the Steinerne Meer, the Loferer Steinberge, and the High Tauern.
The descent follows the same route; after the tour, a stop at the rustic Steinbergalm or the SonnenAlm near the mountain station of the Kampenwand cable car beckons.

Roadbook
From the mountain station, the easy-to-walk path No. 20 leads left of the SonnenAlm on a short ascent. Then it goes with slight ups and downs past a visible wayside shrine and along the panoramic hiking trail below the north flank of the Kampenwand massif to the Steinlingalm.
At the signpost, we keep to the right and ascend steeply towards the Kampenwand summit via trail tracks. On our way, there are strenuous climbs in alpine terrain and even some climbing sections. Below the summit, we reach a scenic plateau. Those who have already reached their limits during the ascent are advised against continuing. A short, exposed crossing at a steel cable follows, then the final summit ascent, which is unsecured.
After admiring the panorama at the top, we choose the same way back. Special caution is required when descending through the rocky terrain. Near the end of the route, you can stop for refreshments at the Steinlingalm, then it goes back to the cable car via the panoramic trail.
