The 905 metre high Hörnleberg rises above the confluence of the Elz and Simonswäldertal valleys and offers a fantastic view across the Elz valley to the Vosges mountains. The "Unserer Lieben Frau vom Hörnleberg" pilgrimage chapel built on the summit can be seen from afar from the valley.
The Hörnleberg can only be reached on foot, e.g. from Oberwinden on the "Hörnleberg Tour" and from the Hörnleberg upper car park via the family-friendly "Treasure Hunt Trail" or the steeper Stations Trail. Other cross paths lead up from Bleibach and Simonswald. The "Simonswälder Gipfel-Tour" and the third stage of the "ZweiTälerSteig" also pass the Hörnleberg.
The Marian shrine "Unserer Lieben Frau vom Hörnleberg" is known far beyond the Elz Valley and has been a much-visited place of pilgrimage for centuries.
The legend of its origins tells of a blind man from Alsace who made a vow to build a chapel in honour of Mary on the mountain he saw first. He regains his sight and sees the distant Hörnleberg. So this is where he wants to build the chapel. But several mornings later, the timber and materials he has brought are not to be found on the building site, but on the summit of the mountain. God's will is recognised in this, and the chapel is built on the highest point of the mountain in the 8th or 9th century.
