In the reconstruction program approved by the Marquis of Pombal, the former palace grounds were generously redesigned. The 170 by 170 meter square, together with the huge archway Arco da Rua Augusta, now forms the entrance portal to the Baixa. To the south, it opens up to the Tejo. The newly erected buildings on both sides were used by the customs and port authorities.
In 1908, the square once again came into historical focus when the Portuguese King Charles I and his son and heir were shot by republicans. During the Carnation Revolution in 1974, the square was also used as a parade ground.
