Lisbon: a walk through history and present
A city route through Lisbon passes by well-known squares, historic buildings, and the everyday life of the city.
The different epochs are visible without having to enter a museum – in the architecture, on the streets, and among the people. At the beginning is the Dominican church in the center. It looks simple but impressive – mainly due to its history. After the earthquake of 1755, it remained as a ruin and thus reminds of a key event in the city's development. In the old town, you experience the dense coexistence of residential houses, cafés, and small shops. Those who continue reach Praça Dom Pedro IV – also called Rossio. The square is a central meeting point and offers a good impression of the historic city center with its paving, fountains, and surrounding buildings. Not far from there is the monument of King João I, a reference to Portugal’s role in maritime history. On the bank of the Tagus lies Praça do Comércio with the statue of Dom José I. The large square opens toward the river and conveys a sense of spaciousness. The route ends in the neighborhood of Cais do Sodré – here
