Hétforrás (Seven Springs)
The current impound of the spring was made in 1896, in the millennial anniversary year of the Hungarian Conquest. The seven pipes were named after chieftains of the Hungarian tribes invading the Carpathian basin: Álmos, Előd, Ond, Kond, Tas, Huba and Töhötöm, whose names are displayed on small stone plates over the outlets. As the legend says for those who drink from each pipe the chieftains will fulfill their wish.
The spring used to provide crystal clear and quite cold (10 °C) water to Óvár (Old Castle) or Felsővár (Upper Castle) as its old names Castle Well or Old Castle Well also suggest. In the 17th century it was renamed to Brunnengraben (Well of Well Hollow). Even a poem was written about it by József Rajnis, a reputable poet of Kőszeg in the 18th century: “There those seven springs offer water” (1781).
Seven Springs was renovated in 1994, 2003 and 2015. A spacious rain shelter was built nearby to protect hikers from rainfall and offer seats to have a snack. The stamper was also placed here.
