The Scharfenberg castle ruins are one of the three castle ruins above Annweiler am Trifels. The castle's landmark is the 20 metre high keep. However, the castle complex was much larger, as the remains of the walls around today's castle ruins show. The castle was named after the Scharfenberg family. Konrad von Scharfenberg appeared in the Hohenstaufen period as Imperial Chancellor and Bishop of Speyer and Metz. The nickname ‘Münz’ cannot be historically proven. The story that there was a mint there is extremely unlikely.
