The nature trail provides information about the red sandstone layers in the Palatinate Forest and the geological features around Trifels, Anebos and Münz.
The trail begins at the Schlossäcker car park below Trifels Castle. To the left of the Barbarossa restaurant, the path leads into the forest. After about 400 metres, the red sandstone path turns right and leads uphill to the Anebos ruins. Here you have a great view of Trifels Castle. On the other side of the mountain, the trail descends to the left, first to a beautiful vantage point with a bench and a great view of the forest and rocks, then to a junction at the Fensterfelsen, where there is a place to rest. Now the red sandstone path leads past the window rocks on the right towards the Scharfenberg ruins (Münz). Those who wish can make a detour to visit them. The Scharfenberg/Münz castle ruin is closed due to renovation work until presumably the end of 2023. The red sandstone path circles the ruins below the castle complex. Passing the window rocks again, you return to the starting point, the Schlossäcker car park. Here you will also find a place to stop for refreshments, the "Barbarossa" inn.

BarbarossaSafety information
In general:
Especially in autumn, also be aware that leaves lying on the ground can hide bumps, roots, stones or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or rainstorms, trees can still fall over or branches can fall down afterwards. Especially in adverse weather conditions, muddy and slippery passages can occur on natural paths. Not all rocks or precipices are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is required in places. You have to expect this type of path impairment when you undertake a hike. If you are of the opinion that certain sections of the trail are not passable for you, you should avoid them.
NOTICE:
We endeavour to announce on this platform any closures that occur due to forestry work or hunting parties. Nevertheless, there are situations where hiking trails are closed and we may not have been informed. If you unexpectedly encounter a trail closure or diversion, please follow the instructions for your own safety.

Roadbook
The red sandstone landscape of the Palatinate Forest is characterised by bizarre formations. Rock towers, table rocks and mountain blocks are just a few examples. How and when did these rocky landscapes come into being, what materials are they made of? These and many other questions are answered by the informative panels on the theme trail around the castle ruins of Anebos and Scharfenberg (Münz). Learn all about colouring, layering and weathering forms of the sandstone on site at the objects themselves. In particular, the rock formation of the Fensterfelsen (between Anebos and Scharfenberg) invites you to take a closer look.
The red sandstone trail is part of the Annweiler Castle Trail and can be reached in various ways: From the Windhof forest car park, simply follow the symbol "Buntsandsteinpfad" (red sandstone path) over the Scharfenberg castle ruins. Alternatively, follow the symbol "Burg Trifels" at the Markwardanlage. On the Schlossäcker, follow the symbol "Buntsandsteinfpad" to the left of the "Barbarossa" restaurant. The car parks "Windhof" and "Schlossäcker" (subject to charges) can be easily reached by car via Trifelsstraße. In this case, follow the road signs to Trifels Castle.
