Arboretum of Zirc
The English garden is located 400 meters above sea level with an area of 18 hectares. The relatively high altitude and precipitation favors the collection of nearly 600 species. The park has a fish pond as a result of damming Cuha Creek in the early-18th century. Planting nonnative species started in the late-18th century. The most valuable species of the collection include specimens of pine and maple trees as well as the oldest white pines in the country. Walking along the shady colonnade of linden trees planted in 1809 is also a remarkable experience.
The arboretum is rich in species of insects and birds, too. Beware squirrel crossing. The park features the statues of King Andrew I and the former abbey and ecclesiastical historian Remig Békefi also.
The arboretum is under the management of the National Park of Balaton Uplands and has had a protected status since 1951.
