A not very difficult, eventful, but exciting route on the Rax, on June 30, 2016.

The approach is usually via the Reißtalersteig and under the rock walls to the left, or from Moassa to Fuchsloch and from there under the rock walls to the right. I tried to ascend in the forest below the Reißtalerhütte on a new forest road and had to return pathless to the trail near the elevation 1375m at its end. Out of curiosity, I went up to the rock entrance of Gretchensteig and crossed under the walls to the currently closed Reißtalersteig. Some rock pieces lay below and above I saw a clear rock detachment. I then went over to the entrance of the Amaliensteig.

    Safety information

The Amaliensteig is rather to be avoided when wet!

    Roadbook

The Amaliensteig can be recognized at the entrance by a somewhat faded inscription.

According to some blue markings and the attached pictures here, the trail leads over small rock steps and crossings, partly also over grass cushions and grassy slopes upwards. The trail is very unpleasant to walk when wet. In the upper section I kept left and climbed further over small rock steps interspersed with grass to soon head to the descent saddle from the Heukuppe. A quick descent to the Karl Ludwighaus, down the Karl Kantersteig and hurriedly over the wide clearing back to Preiner Gscheid.

According to the attached picture here, I, a bird novice, had a small but special experience. In the uppermost part, I saw this bird (sparrow?) chirping on the rock. In my pocket, I still had a piece of a bar, which I showed to the bird. It flew onto a nearby stone and observed me. I climbed a few meters up, mounted the camera on my mini tripod and positioned it so that it included the rock piece while ensuring I somehow appeared in the picture as well. Then I laid a few crumbs on the rock. The bird immediately came flying and nearly pecked me on the hand. Quickly I returned to the camera, activated the self-timer and hurried to descend the few steps again.

I had the impression that the bird, not disturbed by me, felt very powerful and strong. Likewise, I felt strong and self-confidently powerful in this solitude with myself and the rock-studded greenery, following a motto that the strong one is strongest alone. I was able to continue the ascent spiritedly, running almost recklessly but gasping and mastering myself with all the energy available to me. During the descent, a few people came towards me on the Kantersteig. One said, as I rushed past him, 'he's in a hurry.' He could not have known that the little bird had apparently lent me wings.
