The cult image of the Persian-Roman god of sun Mithras is evidence of a large temple complex of the Mithras cult.
The Mithras cult in Schwarzerden
The Persian-Roman god of sun Mithras was worshipped in a wooden temple near Schwarzerden. What remains is a cult image of the god of sun carved into a rock face as a relief. The beginnings of the temple's wooden structure can still be detected in the rock face; which obviously formed the back wall of the former temple complex. The origin of the monument dates back to the 1st century AD.
The cult image
The monument measures 2 x 2 m and was attached to the back wall of the former temple. The depiction shows a fleeing bull onto which the Persian god of sun Mithras is leaping and plunging a dagger into the animal's neck with his right hand.
History can also be wonderfully combined with exercise and nature here: The monument can be reached via the Fritz Wunderlich cycle path and hiking trail.
