King Lajos II memorial plaque, Szekszárd
The inscription states that the royal army numbered roughly 11,000 soldiers. On 16 August 1526 the army departed from Szekszárd along a Roman military road, heading toward Mohács where they would confront the forces of Suleiman the Magnificent. The text emphasizes the sacrifice the army expected to make “for God, the homeland, and the West.”
The plaque also recalls the aftermath: following the Hungarian defeat at Mohács on 29 August 1526, the Ottoman army advanced into the region. According to the inscription, Suleiman’s forces passed through the area from Bátaszék on 5 September during their advance toward Buda. The memorial was erected by the citizens of Szekszárd on the 400th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács, preserving the historical memory of the royal army’s march through the town.
