King Lajos II memorial plaque, Dunaszekcső
During his stay, the king was awakened by Mihály Podmaniczky with urgent news that the Ottoman army had crossed the Drava River. At the same time, reports also arrived that auxiliary forces from Transylvania and Croatia were approaching to support the Hungarian army.
The royal chancellor István Brodarics hurried from Dunaszekcső toward Mohács in an attempt to calm the increasingly eager and impatient army preparing for battle. Despite these efforts, events moved quickly. On 24 August, King Louis II himself had to follow his forces, which were gathering near Kölked before the final advance to Mohács.
The plaque also recalls the tragic aftermath. Following the defeat of the Hungarian army and the death of the young king on 29 August 1526, the victorious Ottoman forces under Sultan Suleiman marched through the region on 3 September on their way toward Buda.
The memorial was erected by the people of Dunaszekcső to commemorate the historic events and the young king who, as the inscription states, sacrificed his life “for God, the homeland, and the West.”
