In honour of the great composer, who lived and worked in Eisenstadt for 30 years, the Haydn monument was created by the artist Heidi Tschank from marble and bronze. The monument stands in the immediate vicinity of Haydn's garden house and the herb garden in the Bürgerspitalgasse, where - according to legend - Haydn also liked to retreat for composing.
The monument is three metres high (including the pedestal) and weighs around 10 tons. It is to be understood as an artistic bow to Haydn's complete works.
The artist Heidi Tschank implemented her idea of representing the "Time of Day Symphonies" in irregularly shaped points and corners, whereby the surfaces were worked with a chisel and the pointed parts were ground. The irregularity in these forms represents Haydn's break with continuity, for he distanced himself from the steady progression in the music
The newly designed ensemble in the Bürgerspitalgasse is rounded off with a specially planted vineyard. Franz X. Lehner, chairman of the winegrowers' association of the Free City of Eisenstadt, planted a total of 30 vines from the time of Joseph Haydn and will continue to cultivate them in the future.
