On this tour, we’ll hike along the main ridge of the Leitha Mountains, staying close to the state border between Lower Austria and Burgenland, in a north-south direction—specifically between the two peaks of the Steinerwegberg and the Buchkogel, which are not only nearly the same height but both feature observation decks. Along the way, you can also enjoy a variety of scenic views and magnificent vistas.
From the Donnerskirchen train station, we walk down Bahngasse into town and, at the intersection with the B 50, continue straight ahead uphill on the main street, past the Bergkirche. At the edge of town, near a playground, we take the forest road marked with white-red-white stripes to the left. Continuing to follow the trail markers, we climb up to the main ridge of the Leitha Mountains, where, just below the summit of the Steinerwegberg, we meet the markers for Long-Distance Hiking Trail 02. We take a 100-meter detour to the right to the Franz-Josefs-Warte, where there are also benches to rest on.Back on the trail, we continue straight ahead downhill along the long-distance hiking trail toward Eisenstadt. After 10 minutes, we reach a paved road, where we turn left. Right at the state border between Lower Austria and Burgenland, a footpath branches off to the right—one of the most beautiful sections of the tour.
