As early as the beginning of the 6th millennium BC, the Neolithic settlement of the Schandorf area is evidenced by archaeological finds. At the time of the so-called "Iron Princes" or "Iron Barons" around 750 BC, Schandorf was at its wealthiest. The melting and marketing of the newly invented metal iron made the population very affluent. Today, the mounds of burial sites in the Schandorf Forest still testify to the wealth and dense settlement along the Pinka at that time.
The unique significance of the Schandorf burial mound field in Europe results from the accumulation of 285 giant burial mounds, some up to 16 meters high and 40 meters wide, dating from the Hallstatt period. In addition, there are two groups of Roman-era burial mounds, which testify to the dense settlement during Roman times.
