The Flame Statue, designed by the famous finnish designer Alvar Aalto, represents the main memorial to the winter war battles (1939-40) of Suomussalmi.
The main monument to the battles of Suomussalmi, the Flame Statue, was designed by the academic, architect and designer Alvar Aalto.
The statue was erected on 30 August 1959 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Battle of Suomussalmi. Fixed onto the base is a metal plaque showing the battlegrounds of Suomussalmi while at its front is an inscription of General Hjalmar Siilasvuo’s words: "The lives of many brave soldiers ensured the great victories of Suomussalmi. They showed their nation an honourable path which was hard but which offered no alternative".
The monument and its surroundings have been restored in the summer of 2022 by Suomussalmi municipality.

Public transport
Suomussalmi can be reached by bus from Kajaani and Kuusamo.
The nearest railway stations are in Kontiomäki and Kajaani, from where there are several daily trains to the south and north. Some incoming trains have a bus connection to Suomussalmi.
The main tourist routes passing through Suomussalmi are the highway 5/E63 and the Via Karelia tourist route.
