Raatteen Portti Winter War Museum, Suomussalmi Finland
Raatteen Portti is a fascinating tourist destination and boasts, among other things, a Winter War (1939-1940) exhibition, field of stones, Winter War Monument and other memorials along Raate Road. The changing exhibition at the Winter War Museum features the Continuation War (1941-1944). Both the changing exhibition and the Frontier Guard Museum commendably tell the military history of the region.

Wild nature in the Raate borderlands
A chance to photograph and watch wild bears from inside safe observation hides. Photographing and watching black grouse, capercaillie, mire birds, owls and rarities from the east under the expert guidance of a professional.
Recreation area
Lodgings for Soviet and Finnish soldiers were built at the Winter War battle sites in the environs of Raatteen Portti. Informative signboards by the side of the trails tell about local events. Outside, the artillery, tank and other wartime equipment date from the Winter War.
Visitors can even overnight in the half-platoon military tents and experience the authentic atmosphere of the Winter War. Overnighting and any lunch are subject to contract prices.
Continuation War exhibition
The Raatteen Portti museum also features an exhibition telling about the Continuation War (1941-1944). Among other things at the exhibition, visitors can test the weight of a long-range reconnaissance patroller’s rucksack and handle real de-activated weapons. Finnish, Soviet and German material and narrative. The shocking partisan attacks and trench railway, also known as the “Railway of Death”, are part of the hushed up history of the Suomussalmi area.
Cycle hire
Ten army bicycles for hire. Visitors can leave their car in the Raatteen Portti carpark and pedal the legendary Raate Road or race to the old village of Suomussalmi. Take a picnic and start pedalling!
Boat hire
Lake Kokkojärvi in the vicinity of Raatteen Portti offers boating facilities. We hire out rowing boats, including lifejackets. Large numbers of Soviets fled across lake Kokkojärvi in the decisive Winter War battles in January 1940. Take your angling gear and see what you can catch!

Raate is near Finland’s eastern border. From the south, Raate Road is via an hour’s flight to Kajaani or Oulu. When driving via Suomussalmi you reach Raate Road along Highway 5/E63. Raate Road is about 215 kilometres by road from Oulu and around 125 kilometres from Kajaani.Parking
