It is the main church of Suomussalmi parish, inaugurated in 1950.
The church was designed by architect J.E. Ermala.
Suomussalmi Church is an example of the reconstruction of twelve churches on the Finnish eastern border and in Lapland that were destroyed in the last wars.
2/3 of the church's construction costs were covered by an American Lutheran grant.
The church is built of brick and concrete and has a light plaster finish.
The church has a steeply pitched roof and is rectangular in shape.
There is an altarpiece painted by the artist Bruno Tuukkanen, picturing some events of Jesus life on earth, and also a glasspainting in the baptismal chapel.
The woodcarvings of the pulpit and the pedestal of the baptismal font, as well as the statue of the apostle in the main doorway, are the work artist Jooseppi Manninen, who was born in Suomussalmi. A Walker&Co. 24-reg. type organ dates back to 1950.
The two bells in the belfry are from Kurkijoki parish in Karelia.
The church seats 650 people.
