The Haukiperä bridge was completed in 1976 and crosses the Värjänsalmi strait of Lake Kiantajärvi.
The Haukiperä Bridge was inaugurated in 1976 by President Urho Kekkonen.
The Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge with a span of 81.5 metres.
Before the bridge was built, Suomussalmi's transport connections were modest, with a ferry crossing lake Kiantajärvi. Next to the bridge you can see the former ferry landing site and on the south bank the red house of the ferry keeper.
In the early days of the Winter War, after the occupation of the Suomussalmi village on 9 December 1939, Soviet soldiers attacked over thin ice on the opposite bank.
Before the attack, the Finnish soldiers had sunk the ferry and the thin ice was no match for Soviet vehicles.
This was the beginning of the Finns' winning streak in the battles of Suomussalmi.
The stone rampart visible from the bridge on the south bank was built after the Winter War as a tank barrier. It builds part of the Salpa-line, a fortified defense line along the eastern border of Finland.
Public transport
Suomussalmi can be reached by bus from Kajaani and Kuusamo.
The nearest railway stations are in Kontiomäki and Kajaani, from where there are several daily trains to the south and north. Some incoming trains have a bus connection to Suomussalmi.
The main tourist routes passing through Suomussalmi are the highway 5/E63 and the Via Karelia tourist route.

The distance from the Suomussalmi municipal centre (Ämmänsaari) to the bridge is about 5.5 km.

At the other end of the bridge, on the Suomussalmi village side (kirkonkylä), there is a parking space.
