Kinizsi Pál lookout tower (Kab-hegy)
Kab-hegy (Kab Hill) is a huge shield volcano with a low profile. Except the peak and its immediate surroundings the hill does not rise high above as its mild slopes are composed of basalt lava broadly spread over due to its high fluidity after eruption. Therefore the landscape is quite flat with a vast forest cover segmented by clearances in a chessboard pattern.
To the south hills of Balaton Uplands rise and even the lake behind the buttes may be visible in clear weather and you can spot the Tihany peninsula, too. To the east you can see slopes of Bakony and its second highest peak Papod with Vitéz Bertalan lookout tower. Beneath your feet lies typical Bakony mountain landscape interspersed with small valleys and villages. Lower on the slopes forest is replaced by clearances.
To the east the forest immediately below hides “Small Moscow”, an interesting and dark piece of history as the top secret military base hid Soviet nuclear warheads during the cold war.
The view from the 10-meter high tower is somewhat obstructed by the radio tower and its buildings, however, by skirting the fence some other directions also open. It is worth checking the clear-cuts to spot other parts of the landscape, e.g. the flat basalt top of Agár-tető, Lugos-tető with its observation tower or Kőris-hegy, the highest peak of Bakony with a radar dome on the top.
The Scots pine lookout tower opened in 2013.
