At the top of Saukkovaara, in a breathtaking scenic spot, there is a beautiful lean-to shelter, perfect for admiring the stunning Kainuu hill landscape that opens up in front of you.
Saukkovaara is essentially a long chain of hills, with the northernmost peak called Koljatinvaara. On the northern slopes of this hill, you'll find the Saukkovaara ski center, and at the highest points of the hill, there are cross-country skiing tracks of national competition level.
Next to the top station of the ski slopes is a stunning two-part scenic shelter with a campifire place. From the top of the hill, the views open up towards the northwest, making it a perfect spot for admiring sunsets. The shelter is easily accessible year-round, as you can drive to the top of the hill, with parking available right next to the shelter.
In the summer, the area is crisscrossed by several hiking and mountain biking trails. The long UKK Trail also passes by the shelter.
Near the shelter, you'll find a toilet and a wood shed.
The shelter is maintained by the municipality of Ristijärvi.
