Die Ringelschanze war Teil der sog. Schwarzwaldlinie - eines linearen Verteidigungssystems von Säckingen bis Pforzheim.

In den Kriegen des französischen "Sonnenkönigs" Ludwig XIV gegen Österreich erbaute der kaiserliche Feldmarschall Ludwig Wilhelm von Baden ("Türkenlouis") zwischen 1692 und 1701 eine ca. 200 km lange Verteidigungslinie mit Schanzenanlagen auf den Schwarzwaldhöhen. So wurde auch die Kammlinie vom Hohwart bis zum Thurner mit einem System aus Redouten und Wall-Graben-Anlagen befestigt.

Der Verein Wälderleben e.V. und der Schwarzwaldverein Hinterzarten-Breitnau e.V. restaurierten die erhaltene Ringelschanze und errichteten in der Mitte der quadratischen Anlage eine Blockhütte. Themenweg Türkenlouis-Pfad führt an den Resten der historischen Schanzen vorbei.
