From Thurner to Hinterzarten

From the bus stop „Thurner“ we hike with the yellow diamond as a trail marker to the chapel and continue towards "Süßes Häusle". Through green meadows, the path climbs up to the edge of the forest, following it until the hiking trail at the location „Süßes Häusle“ leads right into the forest. At the entrance, on the right, we find the first fortification, hidden under trees. We are now already on the "Westweg", marked with the red diamond. We continue hiking straight ahead. On the other side of the forest, we find the location "Doldenbühl-Schanze". Now the path goes slightly uphill to the right towards "Doldenbühl" and "Holzletz". To the left, we have wide views over the land, below us the Jostal valley, a bit further the Hochfirst mountain, and on a clear day, the Alps.

Opposite the location "Holzletz" another fortification is hidden in the forest. The red diamond takes us to "Wildmoos", where we leave the Westweg and again follow the yellow diamond taking the right path to "Ramshalde (1.4 km)". There we go under the B 500, then slightly uphill through meadows to "Oberen Fahrenberg" with its large farms. When we reach the edge of the forest, we leave the paved path to the left and are already at the "Ringelschanze", behind which the Naturfreundehaus (Nature Friends House) is hidden (a place to stop). The yellow diamond leads us further through the forest over the „Schanz Waldeck“ to the "Schanzenhäusle" (closed).

From there, the trail continues straight ahead, then shortly steep uphill over „Sattellegeweg“ to Hohwart, which offers us again an excellent view over the southern Black Forest: on the left Breitnau, a bit further right below Hinterzarten with the ski jumps, Windeckkopf and Feldberg lie before us. Below, the large farms lie in a row like on a string. Now we descend, reach the next location "Hohwart Schanze" to the 4th "Redoute", cross it and arrive at the location "Am Hohwart". From here we go about 200 m straight ahead to a magnificent viewpoint.

We return to the spot, hike towards Breitnau and already see the wind turbine ahead of us. Down below we cross a small road and go up again into the forest on the other side. A few hundred meters further right there would be another fortification, but we leave it, enter the forest, at the next path turn left downhill and are again surprised at the wide views at the forest edge. We descend to the paved road, follow it right along the farms to the location "Schuhhof".

At this point, we turn left towards „Obere Mühle“ and hike with the yellow diamond across to Breitnau. Shortly after the "Pfarrwäldele" a path leads us up to the church, which is worth visiting. From the location "Church" we continue hiking towards "Wirbsteinsattel". In the "valley bottom" we pass a farm to the "Bengelhäusle". In the "meadow valley" we turn right uphill, get a good view of Feldberg and Breitnau and soon reach the saddle. At "Wirbsteinsattel" we must turn left again, after a few meters at "Klengsenhof" on a paved road turn right to "Abrahamenhof". Past beautiful farms it goes past "Am Wirbstein" downhill towards "Ödenbach".

From there you can return by bus number 7216 from the bus stop „Hotel Faller, Breitnau“ on the B 500 to Hinterzarten station. The direct route is paved and about three kilometers long.

If you are not tired, you can hike from the location "Ödenbach" to Hinterzarten station on only partially paved paths. The trail marked with the yellow diamond is about five kilometers long and leads over the „sewage treatment plant“ along the romantic Ödenbach to the „Seiltrieb“. Then we cross the Ravenna and still have to walk a stretch along the B500. Before Oberhöllsteig, we go under it to the left to the „Rössleberg“, then cross the B31 to the „Hinterzarten park-and-ride lot“ (WC). After the „north railway underpass“ we turn left to Hinterzarten station.
