Das Bahnhofsgebäude wurde 1872/73 im Stil der Neorenaissance von Baurat Schlierholz und Bauinspektor Eulenstein für die Königlich Württembergischen Staatseisenbahnen erbaut. Staatsverträge von 1865 hatten es den württembergischen und badischen Eisenbahnverwaltungen erlaubt, auch das preußische Sigmaringen in ihr Streckennetz einzubeziehen.
