Stadt Sigmaringen
Relaxed hike through beech mixed forests with a view of the Danube.
The Bettelküchen trail runs along the edge of the slope above the Danube, through the romantically wild Raintal valley, past beautiful rock formations and viewpoints from which you can admire the loops of the second-longest river in Europe.
Author’s recommendation
A hike that you can also do in extreme heat, as it mostly leads through pleasant mixed forests.

Roadbook
We start our route at the parking lot by the cemetery (Lindenstraße) and head towards the town to Gutenstein Castle. After about half a kilometer, a path branches off uphill to the right, which we follow. At its end, we keep right again until we reach the first viewpoint of our route and let our gaze drift into the valley. Here we immediately turn left and hike along the path at the forest edge until we finally meet a paved road again. We follow this straight westwards until we reach a fork after about 300 meters. Mostly on natural paths, we now move along the edge of the slope and can catch one or the other view into the Danube valley. After about 900 meters, we meet a paved gravel path again; here we keep right and hike for quite a while in a field area called "Bettelküche"; the Bettelküche is a limestone rock formation located below the path, which we can later admire from the Danube shore.
After about two kilometers, we pass a larger intersection where we choose the right path. At the next larger fork, we also keep right and stay on the slightly downhill path until the third major fork, where we go down into the Raintal valley. As the path continues, the Raintal narrows until only a narrow path remains. From here, we admire a romantically wild gorge landscape that leads us directly down to the Danube shore. After walking a short stretch along the river, a path branches off to the right that leads us uphill. At the next junction, we turn left again, now strolling above the Danube and enjoying the beautiful view of the river and Thiergarten. After the bend above the railway tunnel, we choose the path that goes downhill southwards. Here we come very close once again to the Danube shore and its original riverbank vegetation on a narrow natural path and might catch a glimpse of a fresh beaver feeding site. In the last part, we reach the Grimmerriedweg in Gutenstein via a climb with natural steps and return to the starting point at the cemetery.
