Annweiler am Trifels in Trifelsland. The town of Annweiler am Trifels is picturesquely embedded in the valley of the river Queich in the middle of the Palatinate Forest - Northern Vosges Biosphere Reserve. The caringly restored town center around the tanner`s houses along the Queich offers delightful opportunities for walks. Surrounded by forests, meadows and vineyards, Annweiler is an ideal starting point for endless hikes through unspoiled countryside and up to the famous Trifels castle.
Romantic little town between forest and wine
Annweiler am Trifels is the center of the Trifels region and the seat of the municipal administration. Here you will also find the tourism office at Meßplatz, which offers a variety of information for your holiday in Trifelsland and provides accommodation and holiday apartments.
The historical old town with numerous half-timbered houses invites you to stroll along the old waterwheels by the stream Queich and through the tanning district. Also of interest are the frescoes by Adolf Kessler in the town hall, in the Catholic Church, and in the Hohenstaufensaal. From May to October, guided tours of the historic old town are offered every 1st and 3rd Sunday at 11:15 a.m., meeting point is at the museum unterm Trifels in Wassergasse.
The Museum unterm Trifels provides an exciting exhibition on the history of Trifels Castle, the development of the town, important historical figures such as Emperor Barbarossa, Richard the Lionheart, and Frederick II, as well as aspects of landscape history.
Recreation is promised by Ambertpark and the Kurpark (Markwardanlage), the latter featuring a playground and mini-golf. In the summer months, the Trifelsbad guarantees a pleasant cool-off. Additionally, there are many outdoor sports opportunities around Annweiler am Trifels, from hiking and climbing to cycling and mountain biking, as well as paragliding and horseback riding. The Annweilerer Burgenweg and Richard Löwenherz Weg are certified premium trails, but the Kaiser Friedrich Weg to Sommerfelsen, Krappenfelsen, and Jungpfalzhütte is also a worthwhile hike. The train station is the starting point of Tour 8 in the Pfälzerwald mountain bike park. The Queichtal bike path leads to Hauenstein or the Rhine, and the castle tour offers a more active experience through the Pfälzerwald.
The Hohenstaufensaal is the cultural and event center of the city of Annweiler, where numerous concerts, exhibitions, and other cultural events take place throughout the year. All events in the Hohenstaufensaal are accessible. Also accessible is the Keschdefeschd in Annweiler, a market centered around the chestnut, which takes place every year on the first weekend in October.
Other great events include the Burgunder wine festival in the district of Gräfenhausen in mid to late June and the Bindersbach Kerwe in mid to late August.
