Gaja Gorge
The gorge at some places resembles a park and at others it shows the face of untamed nature.
At the bottom and the sides trees and underbrush together with several caves and pits make a complex impression.
The creek also shows various faces. Sometimes winding around its own deposit peaceful and slow, sometimes running down over the rocks along its narrowed bed creating attractive formations.
At some places bridges span over the creek. Near one of them sits the stump of Adam and Eve tree, which was supposed to be two specimens grown together. The old tree fell long ago serving as a natural bridge over the creek but finally, in the 2010s the trunk broke and the hollow stump remained there.
The winding grove is the result of erosion by the creek’s sediment making a deeper and deeper hollow into the bedrock.
The surrounding woodland is game reserve with a long tradition founded by Earl Gyula Károlyi in 1888, although its origins go back to medieval times. It was under state management in the 20th century and today it is managed by a private company. Large games are abundant in the reserve including the non-native sika deer. Stepping off hiking trails is forbidden.
Additional details are provided on information boards along the trails. Visit Károlyi lookout tower to have a view over the whole gorge.
