A Fehér-köves kialakulása a nagyobb eljegesedések idejére tehető, amikor az erős fagyaprózódásos folyamatok miatt a mainál sokkal gyorsabb volt a kőzetek pusztulása. A Mátra andezitsziklái a repedéseibe befolyó víz folyamatos megfagyása, térfogatnövekedése hatására széttöredeztek, majd a gravitáció hatására „elindultak” lefelé. Ez a folyamat ma is tart, így valójában nem „kőtengerről”, hanem „kőfolyásról” beszélünk. Ez a lassú, de folyamatos mozgás az oka annak is, hogy – a sziklákat fehérre színező zuzmókon kívül – nem tudtak megtelepedni növények. Kivétel ez alól a kőtenger passzív részei: itt moha fedi az andezitet.

- Legkényelmesebben a Kékestető, Mátrai Gyógyintézet buszmegállóból kereshetjük fel a Fehér-kövest.
- A hegy aljából, a Mátrafüred, autóbusz-váróterem megállóból is indulhatunk.

Directions
- A Kékestető, Mátrai Gyógyintézet buszmegállóból a Z jelzéseket kell követnünk, majd egy rövid, jelzetlen dózerutas szakaszon érkezünk meg a Fehér-köveshez (3,4 km, 8 m szintemelkedés).
- A Mátrafüred, autóbusz-váróterem megállóból szintén a Z jelzés, majd egy rövid jelzetlen szakasz vezet el úti célunkhoz (4 km, 333 m szintemelkedés).

A Kékestető parkolója fizetős, hétfőtől vasárnapig 8 és 18 óra között vehető igénybe:
- személygépkocsi: 800 Ft/nap
- autóbusz: 2400 Ft/nap

Az autót ingyenesen hagyhatjuk a szanatórium parkját délről kerítő, a gazdasági bejárathoz vezető út mentén.
- Mátrafüreden az autóbusz-váróterem közelében, a Béke utcában és a Parádi úton is alakítottak ki ingyenes parkolókat.
