Only 935 metres above sea level is enough for Muráň Castle to make it the third highest castle in Slovakia.
It proudly rises above the village of Muráň and provides beautiful views of the region's scenery all year round. Its history dates back to the 13th century. Three centuries later, it fell into the hands of the robber knight Matej Bašo, who was, though, executed for his acts. Muráň Castle was at its best during the stay of Mária Széchy who led a very active and social life and had a nickname the Venus of Muráň. She was not afraid of the invasion of King Leopold's troops either. However, she lost the battle and since then the castle began to decline. Extensive fires have made the castle uninhabitable since the 18th century and it was left deserted. Today, it is a ruin popular with tourists. The entrance gate with a tower and the foundations of a Gothic palace are the most preserved fragments.
