A Tokaji-hegységben a legészakibb szegletet leszámítva csak itt, a hegység közepén láthatunk idős erdőket. Ha Pálházától Rostallóig képzeletben húzunk egy vonalat, majd északnyugati és délkeleti irányba is elforgatjuk, a legyezőszerű alakzat lefedi a még fellelhető öreg, 150-200 éves állományokat, amelyek a grófi Károlyi család 17. század óta folytatott uradalmi erdőgazdálkodásának mementói. Ebben a félkörben található a Kőkapun épült Károlyi-vadászkastély (ma szálló), amely szintén e korszak tanúja – és amelynek közvetlen szomszédságában ugyancsak szép, öreg erdők borítják a hegyoldalakat.
A faanyagszállításhoz használt, 1888-ban épült kisvasút (az ország első ilyen létesítménye) szintén fennmaradt; napjainkban turisztikai célokat szolgál. A Károlyiak öröksége – amely az erdők egy részének állapotában és a velük való törődés szellemiségében egyaránt tetten érhető – ma is meghatározó alapja a helyi erdőgazdálkodásnak, amelyet részben a magánerdő-tulajdonosok visznek tovább.

- A Nagyhuta, autóbusz-forduló a legközelebbi buszmegálló.
- Újhuta felől érkezve a Háromhuta (Újhuta), autóbusz-forduló megállót válasszuk!

- A nagyhutai megállótól fölfelé induljunk el a K jelzésen. A templomnál váltusnk jobbra a K◼ jelzésre, ez vezet a Repka-völgybe (1,9 km, 165 m szintemelkedés).
- Az újhutai buszmegállótól a Z jelzést követve észak felé hagyjuk el a települést. A Gerendás-réten jobbra térünk a K jelzésre, majd az Eszkála erdészház utáni elágazásban balra, a K◼ jelzésre váltva juthatunk el a Szentélyerdőbe (6,1 km, 283 m szintemelkedés).

- Nagyhután nincs parkoló, a Petőfi Sándor utcán hagyhatjuk az autót.
