A Déli-Bakony Ajkára néző peremének fennsíkján található hazánkban az országos nyilvántartás szerinti legidősebb, 260 évnél is korosabb fáknak otthont adó erdőtöredék. A hozzá csatlakozó, Padrag-kútig húzódó szurdokban ugyancsak öreg erdők borítják a hegyoldalakat; így egy rövid kirándulással két különleges élőhelyet is bejárhatunk.
A fennsíkon található, magántulajdonban álló erdő – amely területe csaknem 40 hektár – első ránézésre is fás legelő lehetett a múltban. Rendkívüli méretű kocsánytalan tölgy- és bükkmatuzsálemek találhatók mindkét erdőrészletben, melyek ugyanakkor egy viszonylag fiatal faállományba „ékelődnek”; az átmeneti korosztályok szinte teljesen hiányoznak. A faóriások afféle mikroélőhely-szigetekként funkcionálnak – némelyikük élő, egy részük már holt állapotban ad teret például szaproxilofág gombáknak.

Az Országos Erdőállomány Adattár szerint az Ajka-Padragkút községhatárba eső két erdőrészletben találhatók a legidősebb fák Magyarországon. Fontos azonban megjegyezni, hogy a parkokban, temetőkben álló igazán idős fák nem szerepelnek ebben az adatbázisban, és az erdőkben található matuzsálemek sem minden esetben kerülnek nyilvántartásba. Valószínű, hogy a padragkúti fák nem a legidősebbek tehát, de azért igazi ritkaságként kell tekintenünk rájuk.

Az egykori fás legelő a látványos sziklakibúvásokkal tarkított, mély völgy felé lejt, ehhez a széléhez bükk dominálta szurdokerdő kapcsolódik. A sziklák tetején kisebb gyepfoltokra és szárazabb, tetőerdő jellegű élőhelyekre bukkanhatunk. A szurdokban 140 és 150 év a legidősebb fák kora, a keskeny, szintén magántulajdonú erdőrészek összterülete 10 hektár körül van. Mind a szurdok, mind a volt fás legelő zömmel vágásos üzemmódba van besorolva, a terület nem védett, és Natura 2000 területnek sem része.

  • Az Ajka, Volán utca buszmegállóból a S jelzések követésével jutunk el a Szentélyerdő szurdokban található részére (1 km, 49 m szintemelkedés). A 250 évnél is idősebb fákat tartalmazó erdőrészlethez haladjunk tovább a S jelzésen a Természetjáró térképén jelzett pontig, majd itt forduljunk jobbra, a királyréti nyiladék jelzetlen ösvényére (2,8 km, 97 m szintemelkedés).
  • Az Ajka (Padragkút), lakótelep buszmegállóból a S jelzésen jutunk el a Szentélyerdőbe (1,4 km, 57 m szintemelkedés, illetve 3,2 km, 105 m szintemelkedés).
  • A padragkúti temetőtől a Vörösteleki utcán elindulva, majd a S jelzésen balra érkezünk meg úti célunkhoz (2 km, 60 m szintemelkedés, illetve 3,8 km, 108 m szintemelkedés).

Parking

  • Padragkút déli részén, a Virágos utca padkáján hagyhatjuk az autót.
  • Nagyobb parkolót a padragkúti temető előtt találunk, innen viszont hosszú séta a Szentélyerdő.
